Nov. 5th, 2009 01:15 pm LiveJournal Major Notes: Spam counter-attack, RSS feeds again, CSI Deadly Intent contest

The empire strikes back

In recent weeks, we've taken huge steps towards blocking spam accounts on LiveJournal. In fact, we've suspended as many as 30,000 accounts in a single day! We've implemented several pre-emptive measures to prevent the creation of spam accounts, and we've honed our detection of suspicious content. Spam bots are a crafty lot, so we'll continue to refine our tactics and keep up the good fight to keep you safe from spam attacks on LiveJournal.

RSS feeds again

If you're addicted to [info]xkcd_rss, [info]icanhaschzbrgr, or other syndicated feeds, we're pleased to report that we've resolved the update error that was mucking up your RSS feeds. While content was being pulled correctly, it wasn't being posted to the feeds themselves. Late last week, we finally nailed down what we hope was the root problem, so content should post properly. We thank you for your patience.

Wii have killer CSI Deadly Intent contests!

[info]c_s_i

If you're a gamer who loves CSI, have Wii got news for you! [info]c_s_i is sponsoring killer contests. Simply post a question to a member of the CSI crew. The winner will get a free copy of CSI: Deadly Intent for Nintendo Wii (with a retail value of $39.99) and get their question answered by a member of the CSI writing team! There's also a fantastic monthly contest. To enter, join [info]c_s_i, play the online version of CSI: Deadly Intent, and respond to a two-part query for a chance to win a Wii! Entries will be judged on composition and originality. Sorry, but you must be a U.S. resident and over 18 years old to participate. Check out the rules here.

Enveloped in postcards

Last week, we asked you to send in postcards to help us decorate our drab concrete walls. Here's a photo of the results so far! Thank you so much and please keep them coming! You can mail them to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. Be sure to include your username, since we'll be giving ten random users paid account credits.

Photos of the week

If you haven't visited our new LiveJournal photo community, you're in for an amazing visual trip. LiveJournal users from around the world will take you on a scenic journey to everywhere. Post your own pictures or kick back and enjoy at [info]lj_photophile. You can view some of this week's awesome photos after the jump. Please start tagging with geographic location, since we'd like to track all the places around the world represented in this community. Keep on commenting too!

Nov. 5th, 2009 12:05 pm Words with Meaning

Hi, guys! Geof here.

So I finally got around to working on an art journal, and I'm filling a nice, large journal at the moment. (I think it's like, 12''x8''? I dunno, it's a guesstimate.) I have a lot of decent magazine clippings, but here's the problem: I can't seem to find the right quotes/lyrics/etc. to post onto the pages to go alongside them.
Help?

I'd love it if you could reply to this with some of your favorite sayings: random song lyrics, excerpts from your all-time favorite books, quotes from movies you've seen that hits home. I don't have any standards: they can be happy or sad, powerful or easy, inspirational or depressing. Hit me with 'em!

Thanks, lovelies. Hopefully I'll be able to post some piccies, whenever I get around to buying myself a camera with birthday money.

<3.

there’s an interesting idea where if you think of a diary entry…we talk about songs being diary entries and all the rest… I love this idea that violence is loud and peace is quiet. And you break it down to the simplicity of a diary entry, and you go to yourself, “You know, on the happy days, I never wrote. On the happy days, there was no music. And on the happy days, there was no diary entry.”

-glen hansard

as writers and artists, do you feel this to be true? do you find yourself to be more creative when you're depressed? do you turn your sorrow into something? do you do what you do when you're at your happiest?

and pengiun-magpies, so it's not text only ^_^

Nov. 4th, 2009 04:40 pm long time lurrrking (like..years literally)

an old journal - some scans... mostly from 2008.
The first half was lined, the other half unlined.. I like the second half better but what can you do. I journal just for me... so they're rough and unfinished in places .. where my brain puked all over the paper or something. :)

No one seems to take the time to ask you how you're doing - you want to grab a coffee? Maybe grab a bite..?

Nov. 3rd, 2009 10:55 am Question, Text Only

Out of this question and specifically the comment about how you shouldn't censor, my question becomes, how do you not censor.

I'm not concerned that someone will read my journal. In fact, I feel quite safe that no one will. But, I sitll find myself censoring what I write. Or trying to make it sound a certain way, or come across a certain way. Perhaps, I'm worried about how it will be in the future when I go back and reread (which I rarely do anyway), or fear of something else?

So, (for the mostly text-only journalers), how do you get over the self-censor block? (I in no way mean to exclude art journalers, it's just that I am text-only).

Do you just push through it?

i don't keep a traditional sketchbook- i draw on book pages [only from books that are already destroyed and beyond repair].... i was feeling a little blue one day and turned on the tv to have a sulk; martha stewart was on, doing a segment on mushrooms and i thought "oh it'd be lovely to draw a mushroom!" and so i did, and i felt much better afterwards. in fact, it made me feel so much better that i haven't stopped drawing them since :)

I'm going to take atleast ONE of those, and I'm thinking it'll be the entreprenurial one, however you spell it, which should be totally awesome.. because I can TOTALLY fit it in, since I have to extend my stay at USYD do to a double major.  Definitely doing these units.

I'M NOT SUREEE about this one, I've been told it's pointless

and ONE government unit because nothing I'm actually interested in is on in first semester...

Although, thinking of Paul Fawcett totally makes me sick.  His head is just so fucking big.  I'll probably actually see Ana around *rubs chin*.

Nov. 2nd, 2009 09:26 pm Gifted a Book

And I have no idea what to do with it! a bit of an idea of what to do with it! It's quite lovely, really - My friend gave it to me for watching her pet while she was on vacation in Florence with her in-laws. Its cover is leather, and it has a leather strap that keeps it closed... I guess the best way to explain it is to ... show it to you? )

So, problem? I have a day-timer, I have a drawing book, I have a notebook, and a quotations/song lyrics book*. I have no idea what to put in this, but I don't want it to just...sit there. Help...?

So [info]vivid_child pointed me toward a website that allows you to collect your goals, and that reminded me of my own reading goals, so that's what's going in this book. Yey!

I also like [info]picturesinspire's idea about a dream book. I don't dream scenarios, but I can probably** draw out what I remember. I have a spare moleskine that I got on discount... I think I'll start one of these too. Next post will have pictures of stuff in books, I swear. :D

ETA: I know this isn't the bestest-best way to introduce yourself to a new community... ಠ_ಠ
*Forgot to mention this too... @_@
**I say 'probably' because I'm really rather terrible at drawing, hah... but I still do it.

Thanks in advance for suggestions.
